以上两部电影相信很多人都看过,《了不起的盖茨比》(《The Great Gatsby》)与《返老还童》(《The curious case of Benjamin Button》)。
Francis Scott Fitzgerald(1896-1940)is publicly recognized as one of the greatest American novelists in 20th century, who is famous for his depictions of the Jazz Age.
Fitzgerald completed four novels and more than 150 short stories in his life. Among his major works, The Great Gatsby(1925) is the most brilliant one.
The leading U.S. actress Catherine Zeta-Jones’s favorite book is The Great Gatsby. She said that you can “check out this Fitzgerald classic to get a take on the lives of the wealthy during the Jazz Age”.
The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is generally considered as Fitzgerald's best work and certainly the book for which he is best known. The story takes place in 1922, during the Jazz Age, a time of prosperity in the United States after World War I. Gatsby’s longing for mysterious wealth and his past lover brings him insubstantial glory and then pushes him to an eventual fall.
Gatsby's rise to glory and eventual fall from grace becomes a kind of cautionary tale about the American Dream.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
This novel is bursting with fantasy and magic plots. Full grown with a long, smoke-colored beard, requiring the services of a cane and fonder of cigars than warm milk, Benjamin Button is a very curious baby indeed. Left behind by his original family, he was adopted by a black couple. And, as Benjamin becomes increasingly youthful with the passing years, dreams、love、bitterness and arduousness are accompanied throughout his life…
This story was inspired by a remark of Mark Twain to the effect that it was a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end.
Tender is the night
First published in 1934, Tender Is the Night is Fitzgerald’s fourth and final completed novel. The title is taken from the poem "Ode to a Nightingale" by John Keats--“Already with thee! Tender is the night”.
In 1998, the Modern Library ranked "Tender Is the Night" 28th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
Winter Dreams
“Long ago, there was something in me, but now that thing is gone. Now that thing is gone, that thing is gone. I cannot cry. I cannot care. That thing will come back no more.”
Middle-class Dexter Green has big dreams—to one day be as elite as the "old-money" families he works for each day as a golf caddy. When Dexter returns to the golf club as the guest of the men he once caddied for, he meets his undoing in the enchanting Judy Jones.
First published in Metropolitan Magazine in 1922, F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Winter Dreams" was considered by the author to be the first draft of The Great Gatsby. It is his most popular and republished short story within the Gatsby-cluster.
