Italo Calvino (October 15, 1923 - September 19, 1985) was an Italian journalist and short story write . His strange and imaginative allegorical works made him one of the most important Italian novelists of the twentieth century.

Calvino graduated from the Department of Literature at the University of Turin. He had participated in the anti-fascist resistance movement. His debut novel, "The Path to the Spider's Nest" (1947), reflected the life of the guerrillas in a non-heroic way.

His other works include: the "Our Ancestors" trilogy that came out in the 1950s: "The Viscount in Two" (1952), "The Baron in the Trees" (1957), "The Non-Existent Knight" ( 1959), which is both like a real fairy tale and the reality in fairy tales, vividly expressing the situation in which people in the Western world lose their own essence. This trilogy brought the writer world fame. The Subsequently published works "Cosmic Humor" (1965), "Invisible City" (1972), and "If a Traveler on a Winter Night..." (1979, original translation: Traveler on a Cold Winter Night) penetrated the confusing reality and is typically that of postmodernism.

Calvino's "Italian Fairy Tales" (1956) is the culmination of his long-term collection and research of fairy tales from various regions of Italy. It has been translated into languages in many countries.

"If It's a Winter Night, a Traveler" was written in 1979. In the early 1980s, it was introduced to China. Professor Lu Tongliu, an expert on Italian studies, visited Italy in 1979. he met Calvino and then arranged the book’s  translation into Chinese.

Calvino's great popularity in China can be described as overnight fame. The time was in 1997, when the writer Wang Xiaobo passed away. After Wang Xiaobo became popular, people paid special attention to one question: Why is Wang so good at writing, and who influenced him? People began to look for various information about Wang Xiaobo. Wang once wrote an article "My Inheritance", in which he mentioned several Names include Borges and Calvino. Because of this, many fans of Wang Xiaobo began to pay attention to Calvino, Calvino's popularity is greatly increased. Meanwhile in the professional field, Mr. Lu Tongliu organized a number of Italian literature researchers and began to translate Calvino's works, which were later compiled into "Volume 1 of Calvino's Collected Works". Calvino is spreading in China with new frequency and methods, and it is in full swing.

In 2001, a group of young fans of Calvino entered all of Calvino's works in a relay manner by typing on the keyboard  to record all the versions they could find, including translated versions and English versions, Italian versions, etc. They did a good job indeed. Although the site may be gone now,its remains can still  be found online under the name "Calvino Lovers."

There for it can be said that Calvino's spread and acceptance in China are at least not lagging behind ; maybe ahead to some extent.
